JQ Statement on the Arrest of Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian
Date:
April 18 2024
The Jerusalem Quarterly expresses its distress and outrage to learn that Professor Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian, a contributing editor to the journal, was arrested by Israeli police today, April 18th, on charges of incitement to violence. Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian is a leading Palestinian scholar and a tireless advocate for Palestinian victims of Israeli state and non-state violence. We are only too aware of the degrading and dehumanizing conditions to which the Israeli criminal legal system subjects Palestinians—thanks in no small part to Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian's own research on this subject—and this system's role in efforts to silence Palestinian voices critical of Israel's genocidal assault on Gaza since October 7, 2023. We join scholars of conscience and strugglers for justice around the world in calling for Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian's immediate release and for the spurious charges against her to be dropped.

Update: Professor Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian was released on Friday, April 19th.
