Highlight | On the afternoon of October 6, 1973, the Egyptian and Syrian armies took Israel and its security establishment by surprise with major attacks on the Suez Canal front, deep inside occupied Sinai and deep in the occupied Golan Heights, marking the start of the fourth Arab-Israeli war. After military successes by the Arab armies in the first week of the war, the Israeli army was able to regain the initiative, thanks to the airlift set up by the United States to move large quantities of advanced weapons to Israel.
