Israel Decides to Create Buffer Zones (Separation Wall)

Event | A few weeks after the outbreak of the Aqsa Intifada in late September 2000, and before the end of Ehud Barak's term as Israeli prime minister, Israeli security agencies started to draw up a plan to build a security fence in the West Bank, stretching from Tulkarm in the north to Latrun in the south, with the aim of separating Palestinians and Israelis. The plan was officially adopted only on April 14, 2002, under the Ariel Sharon government, which agreed to build a chain of walls equipped with sensors, ditches and barricades over a length of 80 kilometers of the 1967 border.
