The Spring 2020 issue of Journal of Palestine Studies has just been released amid the continuing widespread lockdown in place as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
This issue proudly features a photo essay that brings into relief the brutal caging-in of Palestinians in Gaza, the oft-descried “open-air prison.” By University of California, San Diego historical geographer Gary Fields, the essay draws parallels between the current carceral reality of Gaza and other “landscapes of confinement,” notably, French Algeria, the antebellum American South, and the plague-stricken towns of 16th- and 17th-century Europe.
Additionally, the issue includes a triple book review by Nathaniel Shils of three recently released works of significance for Palestine studies: The Revolution Within: State Institutions and Unarmed Resistance in Palestine, by Yael Zeira; Polarized and Demobilized: Legacies of Authoritarianism in Palestine, by Dana El Kurd; and Arafat and Abbas: Portraits of Leadership in a State Postponed, by Menachem Klein.
