This short biographical sketch of the late Lebanese filmmaker Jean Chamoun (1942–2017) describes a rich trajectory, from early work at the Palestinian Cinema Institute to the documentation of the struggles of ordinary people throughout the Lebanese war years (1975–91). Chamoun’s marriage to Palestinian filmmaker Mai Masri, his popular wartime radio show, his contribution to Beirut’s progressive cultural scene, and his genuine, caring, lively personality are all recalled in this touching remembrance.
