Highlight | Despite its historical hostility to Zionism, the Soviet Union recognized the State of Israel only three days after its establishment. Beginning in the early 1950s, it started to view Israel as a proxy of the United States in the region, and directed its support towards Egypt and Syria. The USSR officially recognized the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1974.
