Biography | Sa‘id al-Karmi, who was born in Tulkarm and graduated from al-Azhar University, was a theologian, a scholar of Sufism and a scholar of Arabic language. Karmi is considered one of the major figures of the Arab national nahda, or renaissance. He was sentenced to death by the Ottoman authorities in 1915, but received a stay of execution because of his age. After he was pardoned in February 1918, he participated in the establishment of the Arab Scientific Academy in Damascus.
