Biography | Bassam Shak'a was a prominent Palestinian national leader who won the municipal elections of April 1976 and became the mayor of Nablus. In 1978, he participated in the establishment of the National Guidance Committee. A Zionist group attempted to assassinate him on 2 June 1981 by planting an explosive device in his car, causing the amputation of both his legs. He firmly opposed the Oslo Agreement but remained committed to the PLO and its unity.
