The Institute for Palestine Studies denounces the Hebrew University’s decision to suspend Palestinian academic and lecturer Professor Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian from her teaching duties. This decision comes after Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian, along with thousands of academics worldwide, signed a petition in October 2023 calling for an end to Israel’s war on Gaza, calling it a genocide. The university administration took this decision following a vicious incitement campaign against Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian, which poses a direct threat to her life amid the ongoing militarization and incitement in Israeli society and institutions.

The Institute recognizes Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian's prominent role and valuable contributions and considers the incitement against her and the suspension decision as an attempt to silence Palestinian voices, which is part of a broader campaign carried out by the Israeli establishment against Palestinians in the ‘48 Occupied Territory and Jerusalem to suppress dissent and criminalize freedom of expression during Israel’s ongoing genocidal war on Gaza.

The Institute values Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian's support for Palestinian students from Jerusalem and the 48’ Occupied Territory at the university, guiding and assisting them in their academic pursuits. The Institute also reiterates its support for Professor Shalhoub-Kevorkian amidst the attacks she faces and affirms her right to freely express her opinions. Furthermore, the Institute encourages our readers to explore her valuable body of work published on various academic platforms, including those published on the Institute’s various platforms.
