Event | Since Israel occupied the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in 1967, Palestinian detainees have often resorted to hunger strikes, collectively and as individuals, to force prison authorities to improve their conditions of detention and to protest, in particular, against Israel's policy of administrative detention. One of the most significant hunger strikes took place in 1987: it began on March 25 and lasted until April 13. The latest was that by administrative detainee Hisham Abu Hawash, which lasted 141 days (17 August 2021 – 4 January 2022) and ended in the Israeli commitment to release him on February 26, 2022.
