Job Description – Assistant Editor, Production

The Journal of Palestine Studies (JPS), established in 1971 and published by Routledge, Taylor & Francis on behalf of the Institute for Palestine Studies (IPS), is the leading interdisciplinary quarterly devoted to the study of Palestinian affairs. JPS offers a range of perspectives by global scholars and public figures. Its peer-reviewed articles, reports, essays, and other content cover a broad range of topics and span the humanities and social sciences, including, but not limited to, history, political science, international relations, law, economic development, geography, sociology and anthropology/ethnography, as well as gender and queer studies, literature, and the arts. The journal is the flagship publication of IPS—a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan academic institution that is unaffiliated with any political organization or government.

JPS is currently recruiting for the position of Assistant Editor, Production—a full-time, remote position. The Assistant Editor, Production is part of a collaborative, collegial editorial team.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Proofreading all JPS content in accordance with Chicago Manual of Style, including inside and outside covers, ads, images, captions, table of contents, and all text content; correcting/filling out all endnotes; formatting copy; and fact-checking to ensure information is accurate and complete.
Coordinating and handling the entire production process with journal authors, Routledge, Taylor & Francis, the compositor, and the printer and continuously tracking the production process.
Ensuring the overall quality of the journal.
Overseeing the stable of external proofreaders, including recruiting, vetting, scheduling, assigning work, and processing invoices.
Providing authors with article proofs, managing author contracts, and vetting author corrections in consultation with the Associate Editor.
Coordinating with the IPS Digital Editor and/or the Routledge, Taylor & Francis marketing team to promote JPS content and events.
Maintaining and updating the JPS Style Guide, JPS Spelling Guide, and JPS Design Specs.
Updating Salesforce database continuously with scholar information and new JPS content.
Reviewing the JPS Bibliography format and content.
Writing occasional book reviews for JPS, or blog posts for the IPS blog, Palestine Square.
Assisting editorial team to prepare for semi-annual Editorial Board meetings.
Representing JPS at occasional IPS events such as receptions and seminars outside regular office hours; setting up/working with IPS team as needed.
Participating in the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and supervision of seasonal interns as needed.
Providing other research and administrative support to JPS as necessary.

Qualifications 

  • Proofreading, copy editing, and/or press production
  • MA degree (Middle East studies or journalism preferred) or BA with 5 years' experience. 
  • Proficiency in applying the Chicago Manual of Style and house style guides.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook Express, Adobe Creative Suite,
  • Experience with manuscript management systems such as ScholarOne.

The desired candidate will be extremely attentive to detail, meticulous, reliable, self-motivated, highly organized, and able to multitask. They must have an outstanding work ethic and be fully committed to producing a journal of the highest quality. They must also be able to engage in problem-solving and to give and receive constructive criticism while participating actively within a close-knit editorial team. Knowledge of Palestinian affairs and Arabic is preferred but not required.

Salary range: $42,000-$48,000. This position offers a competitive benefits package, including health, vision, and dental insurance, annual PTO, 401K, life insurance, and professional development opportunities. Flexible and remote working options are also offered.
