Period | On September 28, 2000, following the failure of the July final status negotiations for the occupied Palestinian territories between PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, under the auspices of US President Bill Clinton, the Likud Party leader Ariel Sharon made a provocative visit to the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque. The visit spurred a large-scale uprising known as the Al-Aqsa intifada, which continued for several years, distinguished from the first intifada by its predominantly militaristic characteristic.
