Photograph | Days after the outbreak of the strike in Jaffa, representatives of the Arab parties initiated, on April 25, 1936, the “Arab Higher Committee” headed by Muhammad Amin al-Husseini. They called on the British Mandate authorities to respond to the following demands: To stop Jewish immigration; to stop the transfer of lands to the Jews; and the establishment of a national government accountable to a proposed Representative Council. Six months after the outbreak of the general strike, this committee succeeded in persuading the representatives of the popular groups, who joined in "national committees", to end the strike, in response to a call made by several Arab kings and princes calling on the Palestinians to "rely on the good intentions of our friend Great Britain, which promised to respond to [our] just demands."
