Biography | Tawfiq Canaan, born in Beit Jala and a graduate of the American University of Beirut, one of the first Arab doctors in Jerusalem, the director of the Leper Hospital there, and a pioneer in ethnographic research into Palestinian folklore, died on this day in 1964. He had chaired the Palestine Oriental Society, mastered six languages, which gave him access to numerous cultures, and wrote a large number of articles and books on medicine, including popular medicine, and on popular heritage.
