Saeb Erakat: 1955-2020

Dr. Saeb Erekat, Secretary General of the Executive Committee of the PLO, member of Fatah’s Central Committee, twice-elected member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, has died after contracting the novel coronavirus.

Erekat was born in 1955 in Abu Dis, Jerusalem and completed his higher education in San Francisco State University. He earned a PhD in Political Science from Bradford University in the UK. He then worked as a university lecturer at An-najah National University in Nablus and as a journalist in al-Quds Palestinian newspaper before he began his political work.

President Mahmoud Abbas declared a three-day mourning period for the national leader that represents, as Abbas said, “a great loss for Palestine and its people, we feel a deep sadness for losing him, especially in these difficult times that the Palestinian cause is facing”. He added that “our people will remember the great Dr. Saeb Erekat, son of Palestine, who stood at the forefront defending the causes of his nation and people in the fields of national work and struggle and in the international field.”
