Abstract

The author describes the remarkable relationship between General Jan Christian Smuts, South Africa’s prime minister, and Chaim Weizmann, the Zionist leader and Israel’s first president. This study shows that the strong personal interaction between Smuts and Weizmann was but a microcosm of all the cultural, economic, political and imperial factors converging in the triangular relationship of Zionism, Britain and South Africa.
