Karen Armstrong wrote that Jerusalem has a “sacred geography” from which people draw their conceptions of themselves–and therefore is so bound up in myth that objective reality becomes obscured.1 Rashid Khalidi believed it easy to see how the city is a “touchstone of identity” for all its inhabitants, past and present.2 Meron Benvenisti argued that this touchstone has in fact become a “gigantic quarry from which each side has mined stones for the construction of its myths–and for throwing at one another.”
