نبذة مختصرة:

This essay examines how Israel’s genocide in Gaza has been received in Colombia, a country with close historical ties to Israel, but one that has also been the site of a vibrant Palestinian solidarity movement both inside and outside the halls of power. The essay situates Palestinian solidarity among Colombian social movements, trade unions, Indigenous groups, and leftist President Gustavo Petro in their shared understanding of Colombia’s own internal conflict, one in which Israel has played a key role. At the same time, it calls into question the durability of Colombia’s attempts to hold Israel accountable for its genocide by examining the opposition Petro continues to encounter from the political establishment and from segments of the population. The author ends with reflections on what needs to be done in order to codify into law Petro’s unprecedented policies before his time in power is up.
