| The Institute for Palestine Studies (IPS) is the only institute in the world exclusively devoted to research, analysis, and publication on Palestinian affairs and the Arab-Israeli conflict. IPS was established in Beirut in 1963 and also has offices in Washington D.C., an affiliate in Ramallah, and a small office in Paris. |

Dear Friend,
Newt Gingrich, candidate for the Republican party presidential nomination and former House speaker, is spreading the old tale that the Palestinians are an "invented people." |
|
"Remember, there was no Palestine as a state -- (it was) part of the Ottoman Empire. I think we have an invented Palestinian people who are in fact Arabs and historically part of the Arab community and they had the chance to go many places."
|
 |
Instead of backing away from this claim, he defended his remarks later in a debate in Iowa. He added even more to cringe about:
"Somebody ought to have the courage to tell the truth.
These people are terrorists."
These statements remind us that the ways American political leaders talk about Palestinians are often both false and destructive.
The Institute has for nearly 50 years worked to provide credible research and information for scholarly and policy communities. However, Gingrich's ignorant quotes show we have a long way to go and we need your help to get there.
In this letter, we share how we are working to bring Palestinian voices into the beltway and we ask you to help us with a tax-deductible donation today.
Due to the absence of Palestinian views in Washington, the Institute for Palestine Studies launched a new phase in its development by introducing a Visiting Senior Fellowship program at its DC office.
The fellow provides independent, objective, and informed research and analysis on the Palestine question and the Arab-Israeli conflict. The main audiences are academic and policy institutions, as well as where our insights are so badly needed -- the American media.
A RECENT SUCCESS
Our inaugural fellow was well-known Amman-based independent analyst Mouin Rabbani. He was based out of our DC office for a period of three weeks last month as the United Nations considered the question of Palestinian membership. He gave media interviews and public lectures on the significance of and prospects for the Palestinian application, among other topics.
His fellowship proved a big success.
During his brief stay in the American capital, Mr. Rabbani contributed op-ed articles to leading newspapers and online outlets, appeared on several television and radio programs, and spoke publicly at a number of university panels on the Palestinian membership initiative.
Rabbani delivered 6 talks in the DC area and was in nearly 30 media outlets, including quotes in The New York Times, an article in the London Review of Books, an appearance on Al Jazeera English and an oped in Foreign Policy.
In all, an estimated 450,000 people saw, heard, or read something by Mr. Rabbani during his fellowship in Washington.
OUR FUTURE SUCCESS DEPENDS ON YOU
Our success encouraged us to expand this program by bringing in more visiting and resident fellows in the future to provide on-the-spot commentary during big news stories -- when balanced and informed perspectives are needed the most. Our top priority is growing the Institute’s outreach, to offer our unique, independent expertise to the public and foreign policy elite. To do so, we need your help.
We ask you to contribute now so we can meet our fundraising goal of $50,000 for this coming year.
Please help IPS fulfill its mission with a generous tax-exempt donation today.
Thanks to your support in 2011, IPS was able to expand its outreach and online presence through better use of new media and our popular Palestine Studies TV (PSTV) video series, among others. We hope that we will be able to consolidate our fellowship program in 2012 and beyond through your commitment to support the Institute and its mission.
Please keep in mind: no donation is too small or too big. Your gift will help us reach our goal.
How you can support this essential work.
